Preschool and school for refugees

Citizens from Ukraine can apply for a residence permit under the EU’s temporary Protection Directive. They can also apply for asylum. Children under the age of 18 have the right to go to preschool and school once they have received a permit or applied for asylum.

Children and youths with a residence permit under the EU’s temporary Protection Directive have the same right to education as asylum seekers in Sweden.

School is not compulsory unless you are registered as a resident of Sweden at the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket).

Contact the municipality in which you live to apply for preschool and school.

You apply to preschool, compulsory school or upper secondary school in our e-service.

To qualify for a school placement you need to have received your residence permit under the EU’s temporary Protection Directive from the Swedish Migrations Agency (Migrationsverket) or applied for asylum in Sweden.

Please attach:

  • a copy of the child’s passport or ID and
  • a copy of the child’s residence permit or
  • a receipt of the child’s asylum application or LMA card

Once we have confirmed the child’s right to education you will receive an offer of school place. We will also ask you a few questions about the child’s language and school background to prepare for the child’s arrival.

First we confirm the child’s right to education and residence in Håbo municipality. We manage all applications centrally.

Preschool and compulsory school

If you have requested a specific school or preschool your wish will be taken into consideration but placement is mainly based upon availability.

Once we have confirmed the child’s right to education you will receive an offer of school place. In the offer there is also a date when the child can start school or preschool.

The child’s parent or guardian need to accept the offer. If there are two parents or guardians both need to approve.

We will also ask you to answer a few questions about the child’s language and school background to prepare for the child’s arrival.

The school will contact you before preschool or school starts.

Upper secondary school

Youths between 16-17 years who need to learn Swedish will be offered a place at Fridegårdsgymnasiet’s introductory programme.

Once we have confirmed the youth’s right to education, we will ask you a few questions about the youth’s language and school background.

The school will contact you to book an initial meeting.

Asylum seekers and persons with a residence permit under the EU’s temporary Protection Directive, with children between the ages of 1-5 have the right to have their child attend preschool from the age of one if the parent:

  • is working
  • is studying
  • is seeking employment
  • is on parental leave

All children are entitled to attend free public preschool for at least 15 hours per week starting from the autumn term when they turn three years old.

  • Education in preschool class, compulsory school or school for pupils with learning disabilities.
  • School transport

Children of asylum seekers and of persons with a residence permit under the EU’s temporary Protection Directive have the right to attend:

  • Upper secondary school
  • School for pupils with learning disabilities

Fridegårdsgymnasiet is the upper secondary school in Håbo municipality. Pupils that need to learn Swedish are offered a place at Fridegårdsgymnasiet's introductory programme.

Education in Sweden need to begin before the child turn 18. Once you have started your education, you have a right to finish your programme even after you turn 18.

In Håbo only persons registered as residents in Sweden at the Swedish Tax Agency can receive compensation for transport to and from school.
